A partir do segundo semestre de 2025 a produção de vinhos brasileira passará a fazer parte da coleção de livros The Classic Wine Library, da Academie du Vin Library. A editora inglesa, uma das mais respeitadas do mundo quando o assunto é vinho, foi fundada por Steven Spurrier, figura lendária que na década de 70 tinha uma loja de vinhos com o mesmo nome em Paris, na França – foi lá que Spurrier concebeu o que viria a ser o famoso Julgamento de Paris, mas isso já é outra história.
A produção de vinhos do Brasil entra no catálogo graças a obra “The Wines of Brazil”, escrita em inglês por Tufi Neder Meyer (foto acima, em visita à vinícola Ametista, em Ametista do Sul (RS)). Médico de formação, Tufi é um apaixonado por vinhos, que pesquisa desde antes de ter iniciado os estudos de medicina. Educador de vinhos desde os anos 90, Tufi é professor na The Wine School Brazil (aprovada pela WSET, organização internacional que oferece cursos de educação e qualificação para profissionais e entusiastas de vinhos, destilados e saquê, na qual tem o diploma de honra nível 5). O livro, que deverá ser lançado até julho, já está em pré-venda em alguns sites, veja alguns deles ao final do texto.
“Foi uma grande satisfação – e honra – ter sido convidado por Rebecca Clare, editora da L’Academie du Vin, para escrever este livro”, comemora o autor. “Nos conhecemos quando traduzi o manual de estudos French Wine Scholar para o português. Enviei um capítulo experimental, gostaram do texto, e fui contratado. Assim começou esta fascinante viagem de aprendizado pelo vinho brasileiro”, relembra.
Tufi levou cerca de 20 meses para dar por finalizado o trabalho. Neste período relata ter visitado 164 vinícolas em 10 estados, além do Distrito Federal. Andou de Sul a Norte do país, do Rio Grande do Sul até Pernambuco. Nas andanças, descobriu muito: “um grande número de novos cultivares, novas regiões, novos produtores, novas formas de fazer vinho no Brasil”, antecipa. O autor avalia também a qualidade do vinho brasileiro, segundo ele “crescendo de modo acelerado, mas já com nível muito alto”, explica.
A publicação passa a ser um dos 39 títulos da coleção The Classic Wine Library – o primeiro livro de qualquer país da América do Sul nesta linha. “The Wines of Brazil” estará no catálogo ao lado de obras como “The wines of Portugal”, de Richard Mayson, “The wines of Piemonte”, de David Way, e “The story of Champagne”, de Nicholas Faith. Uma obra escrita em inglês e editada pela Academie du Vin Library certamente abrirá novas possibilidades para o vinho brasileiro. “Estamos muito animados em ter um título sulamericano na série Classic Wine Library”, afirma Hermione Ireland, editora na Academie du Vin Library. “Esta obra apresentará a muitos do mundo de língua inglesa os vinhos emocionantes que estão sendo feitos no Brasil hoje”. E para quem pergunta sobre a edição em português, ela antecipa: “pretendemos trabalhar com uma editora brasileira para produzir uma edição em português em breve’.
O livro
O Brasil, que tem aproximadamente 80 mil hectares de vinhedos abrangendo uma grande diversidade de solos e climas, produz vinho desde a chegada dos portugueses no século XVI e atualmente é responsável por uma gama de produtos: vinhos doces, espumantes, fáceis de beber e envelhecidos. Embora nossa produção tenha volumes semelhantes a países como Nova Zelândia, Grécia e Áustria, os nossos vinhos não são muito conhecidos fora da América do Sul.
“Escrever o livro, deixando-o à altura dos outros da prestigiosa Classic Wine Library, exigiu grande dose de trabalho, pesquisa, viagens, degustações técnicas”, pondera o autor. “Escrever, rever, reescrever – um ciclo quase interminável, até chegar (se é que se chega mesmo) a um texto satisfatório. A obra, afinal, se propõe a ser abrangente na teoria (por exemplo, História, Lei do Vinho, Viticultura) e na prática (de Pernambuco ao Rio Grande do Sul)”, constata. “Foi uma tarefa das mais gratificantes, cheia de boas surpresas”, comemora.
No material de divulgação do livro, em inglês, a editora indica que ‘The Wines of Brazil é um livro para exploradores em busca de vinhos diversificados e fora dos roteiros mais conhecidos. A obra começa relatando a história da vinificação no país, antes de passar a explicar a viticultura e a produção de vinho atuais. As regiões e os seus produtores de vinho são perfilados em detalhe, com particular destaque para aqueles cujos vinhos são vendidos fora do Brasil’.
O trabalho de Tufi, ilustrado por mapas coloridos e fotografias – a maior parte delas feita por ele, como a capa do livro, uma imagem da Casa Geraldo, em Andradas (MG), ‘apresenta uma história detalhada da produção de álcool no Brasil, desde os povos indígenas até a chegada dos colonos europeus e as bases do negócio do vinho de hoje, e também explora as diferentes variedades e métodos de cultivo de vinho do Brasil em sua ampla gama de terroirs, desde a região pioneira da Serra Gaúcha, no Sul, até os trópicos do norte do Vale do São Francisco. Além disso, The Wines of Brazil Fornece detalhes sobre muitos dos produtores brasileiros, incluindo recomendações do autor e informações sobre visitas a vinícolas’.
Depois deste longo período de imersão na produção de vinho brasileiro, Tufi antecipa o que o leitor vai perceber com a leitura de The Wines of Brazil: “descobrirá que o vinho brasileiro é complexo, fascinante, diferente e gratificante”, diz, e reforça: “e merece mais reconhecimento e atenção, vencendo o injustificável preconceito”.

The Wines of Brazil puts Brazilian production in the catalog of one of the most respected wine book publishers in the world
From the second half of 2025, Brazilian wine production will become part of the book collection The Classic Wine Library, of the Academie du Vin Library. The English publishing house, one of the most respected in the world when it comes to wine, was founded by Steven Spurrier, a legendary figure who in the 70s had a wine shop with the same name in Paris, France – it was there that Spurrier conceived what would become the famous Judgment of Paris, but that’s another story.
The production of wines from Brazil enters the catalog thanks to the work “The Wines of Brazil”, written in English by Tufi Neder Meyer (photo above, on a visit to the Ametista winery, in Ametista do Sul (RS)). A doctor by training, Tufi is passionate about wines, and has been researching since before he started his medical studies. A wine educator since the 90s, Tufi is a teacher at The Wine School Brazil (approved by WSET, an international organization that offers education and qualification courses for wine, spirits and sake professionals and enthusiasts, in which he has the level 5 honors diploma). The book, which should be released by July, is already on pre-sale on some websites, see some of them at the end of the text.
“It was a great satisfaction – and honor – to have been invited by Rebecca Clare, editor of L’Academie du Vin, to write this book”, celebrates the author. “We met when I translated the French Wine Scholar study manual into Portuguese. I sent an experimental chapter, they liked the text, and I was hired. Thus began this fascinating journey of learning about Brazilian wine”, he recalls.
Tufi took about 20 months to finish the work. During this period, he reports having visited 164 wineries in 10 states, in addition to the Federal District. He walked from South to North of the country, from Rio Grande do Sul to Pernambuco. In his wanderings, he discovered a lot: “a large number of new grape varieties, new regions, new producers, new ways of making wine in Brazil”, he anticipates. The author also evaluates the quality of Brazilian wine, according to him “growing rapidly, but already at a very high level”, he explains.
The publication becomes one of the 39 titles in The Classic Wine Library collection – the first book from any South American country in this line. “The Wines of Brazil” will be in the catalog alongside works such as “The wines of Portugal”, by Richard Mayson, “The wines of Piemonte”, by David Way, and “The story of Champagne”, by Nicholas Faith.
A work written in English and edited by the Academie du Vin Library will certainly open up new possibilities for Brazilian wine. “We are very excited to have a South American title in the Classic Wine Library series,” says Hermione Ireland, editor at the Academie du Vin Library. “This work will introduce many in the English-speaking world to the exciting wines being made in Brazil today.” And for those who ask about the Portuguese edition, she anticipates: “we intend to work with a Brazilian publisher to produce a Portuguese edition soon”.
The book
Brazil, which has approximately 80 thousand hectares of vineyards covering a great diversity of soils and climates, has been producing wine since the arrival of the Portuguese in the sixteenth century and is currently responsible for a range of products: sweet, sparkling, easy-to-drink and aged wines. Although production has similar volumes to countries such as New Zealand, Greece and Austria, the wines of Brazil are not well known outside South America.
“Writing the book, making it up to par with the others in the prestigious Classic Wine Library, required a great deal of work, research, travel, technical tastings”, ponders the author. “Writing, revising, rewriting – an almost endless cycle, until you reach (if you really arrive) a satisfactory text. The work, after all, proposes to be comprehensive in theory (for example, History, Wine Law, Viticulture) and in practice (from Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Sul)”, he says. “It was one of the most rewarding tasks, full of good surprises”, he celebrates.
In the book’s promotional material, in English, the publisher indicates that ‘The Wines of Brazil is a book for explorers in search of diversified wines and off the beaten track. The work begins by reporting the history of winemaking in the country, before going on to explain current viticulture and wine production. The regions and their wine producers are profiled in detail, with particular emphasis on those whose wines are sold outside Brazil’.
Tufi’s work, illustrated by colorful maps and photographs – most of them made by him, such as the cover of the book, an image of Casa Geraldo, in Andradas (MG), ‘presents a detailed history of alcohol production in Brazil, from indigenous peoples to the arrival of European settlers and the bases of today’s wine business, and also explores Brazil’s different varieties and methods of wine cultivation across its wide range of terroirs, from the pioneering region of Serra Gaúcha in the south to the northern tropics of the São Francisco Valley. In addition, The Wines of Brazil provides details on many of Brazil’s producers, including the author’s recommendations and information on winery visits.
After this long period of immersion in the production of Brazilian wine, Tufi anticipates what the reader will perceive with the reading of The Wines of Brazil: “you will discover that Brazilian wine is complex, fascinating, different and rewarding”, he says, and reinforces: “and it deserves more recognition and attention, overcoming unjustifiable prejudice”.
